How Do I Help My 2nd Grader?.
You found this page because you have a 2nd Grader and a desire to get them off to a good start.
2nd grade is the last grade where phonics and decoding the sounds of words is taught. This is a grade known more for reinforcing than taking too many major steps forward. Next year will be your student’s first SBAC assessment, where you and your school will be able to see normed data on how they are performing vs the rest of the country.
Your partnership in 2nd grade will focus on developing a little more grit and persistence. You will see your student asked to write multiple paragraphs in a story or essay and organize them. You will encounter more complex and multi-step word problems. Your student most likely will have their first report or project where you are not doing most of the work. Hopefully by now, you can engage your student in reading chapter books to you at bedtime sometimes too.
